Under the Seams Runs the Pain: A Musing on Artists Who Make Other People

Saturday, October 4th 2014
Doors open 8pm
Screening 9pm
Discussion to follow

Curated by Chloé Rossetti and BHQFU.

This evening will focus on the work of students, faculty, visiting artists and friends affiliated with BHQFU, whose practice is partially devoted to the creation of other people. Predominantly video works will be shown, with a few live performances and presentations.

A person or persona in this sense differs from an avatar or character inasmuch as the goal is not to freeze a personality in time for the entertainment of others, or for any kind of escapism; the goal is to form a self—a self that grows, changes, falls down, gets back up again—that confronts the messy business of living. These selves, or others, are also inherently political in their creation, as they claim space in a world that is hostile to their natural occurrence. We stitch new people together to make ourselves more whole.

The artists and public will view and then discuss the works presented. We will also have a selection of supplemental video material on-hand, curated by the event organizers, if some historical precedent or context is required. A sample of these can be found below.
